The 15th Convocation Ceremony of the Aga Khan University kicked on Saturday morning with a customary procession at the Serena Conference Center in Kampala. At this year’s Convocation, 103 degrees were awarded to Graduands in several fields with 20 acquiring Masters Degrees in Education Development, 32 Bachelor’s Degrees in Nursing, 15 Bachelor’s Degrees in Midwifery and 36 Diplomas in General Nursing.
In his address, Firoz Rasul the Aga Khan University President congratulated Graduands for showing resilience throughout the journey of their education and he urged them to use their skills and innovation to face not only local but even regional challenges. “As graduates of the Aga Khan University you are poised to join this innovation generation, you possess the skills, knowledge and the leadership capabilities needed to address some of the most important challenges facing Uganda and the East African Region.” Said, Firoz Rasul – President Aga Khan University.
The University’s President also revealed that the construction of the Aga Khan University Hospital will be a milestone in elevating the quality healthcare in Uganda. “The University Hospital will offer care in an array of specialties where capacity is currently very limited including maternal child health, surgery, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and emergency medicines.” In her speech, the Chief Guest and Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng commended the Aga Khan Foundation for its drive gear to establishing the Aga Khan University Hospital and urged the Graduands to broaden their horizons. “We need you to empower others by fully sharing your knowledge and skills. We need you to set high standards and to hold yourself and others accountable for meeting them.” Said, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng – Minister of Health.
The 15th Aga Khan Convocation is looking at transforming Uganda by urging students to take up leadership roles to find solutions to pressing problems. “...very important because we have been natured through Aga Khan University in Multi sectors or others functions in health which can enable us to go on to be ambassadors to change you know.” Said, Sharon Otori – Graduand. In the quest for better health and service delivery in the country to address enormous challenges, it crucial that the country continues to train more health professionals. The Aga Khan University has embarked on building the infrastructure in this particular field.
