Over the years, Lango Sub-region has been frequently listed among the worst performing regions in Uganda and the poor show has been attributed to poor facilities in the schools here. According to Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal, this is partly because many teachers and students look for better services in Kampala. “Am very upset that very many Langi are taking their children to Kampala where they are paying 1 million, 1.5 million for a child in secondary school. And I have been told by the parents that when they take their children to Kampala to what they call the best schools in Kampala, they find the majority of the teachers are Langi.” Said, Cecilia Ogwal – Dokolo Woman Member of Parliament.
Ogwal who awarded bursaries to pupils who excelled in the 2017 Primary Leaving Examinations called on the government to invest more in rural schools. “The central government should listen to our complaints, listen to the challenges of the district and translate our challenges into policies and translate those policies into budgetary actions.” The students also received mattresses. Dokolo district had 79 first grades in the 2017 PLE. But Ogwal believes the region can do better. “It is a challenge to us, let us do something if they asking us to make a contribution let’s feel free to help don’t say these are UPE children these are Museveni’s children.”
According to Dokolo’s District Inspector of Schools Dr. Dennis Okello, the bursary scheme initiated and managed by Ogwal has helped many poor families. “Seriously we are very happy, we are having 18 girls who got division one and then some other 61 boys who got division one.” Said, Dennis Okello – Dokolo Inspector of Schools. Paul Ochwo the proprietor of Gilgal Primary School told NTV that in PLE Dokolo came 3rd out of the 8 districts that make up the Lango Sub-region.
