As Telecom Companies struggle to offer the best and cheap internet services, Airtel Uganda has continued to cut down on its data prices with the aim of increasing internet penetration in Uganda which currently stands at 45%. “And I think we are trying to ensure internet bundle on a daily user for 500 shillings he can get up to 40MB, 1,000 shillings can get up to 100MB that is like a 60% drop in rates. As we speak today, this morning Airtel customers are already enjoying.” Said, VG Somasekhar – Airtel Managing Director.
The Managing Director Airtel Uganda while addressing the media noted that by the end of June this year, the whole country would be covered by 100% Broadband 3G networks after they have upgraded their services across the country. “…partner for the government and I truly believe Airtel is a partner to the government and to the country. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT Bagiire Vincent noted that the move by Airtel to reduce internet costs is a milestone achieved by the Ministry following the Presidents demand to ensure low internet charges. “One of the reasons we have been frantically discussing the cost of data has been addressed today by Airtel and we are indeed extremely happy. That one of the directives His Excellency the President gave to us as the Ministry to ensure the cost of data is reduced has been performed by Airtel.” Said, Bagiire Vincent – Permanent Secretary, Ministry of ICT.
