Nakumatt Supermarket might have closed shop in Uganda but the former East African Commodity giant continued to grapple with paying suppliers. The burden, so heavy to bear that its own assets on the market with the directive of the High Court in order to pay up the suppliers. But the Nakumatt proprietors were not about to go down easily. A truck registered in the names of Nakumatt Holdings was at Namugongo Police Station ready to be taken to the High Court. The driver of the truck according to bailiffs locked the vehicle so that no one could move it, unfortunately to him the bailiffs came determined to recover the money.
According to the Court Bailiffs, the truck was illegally transferred from the Gayaza Warehouse without the High Court knowledge. the bailiffs wanted to access the Warehouse to recover the supplier’s money but in vain. “Some time back we wanted to enforce it and we were frustrated by the Police. These very people, the debtors who were supposed to pay, somehow somewhere they connived with somebody to frustrate us.” Said, Kyenda Godfrey – Court Bailiff.
The Court Orders obtained by NBS Television showed that ten cars had to be auctioned to recover the money but since the order, only one Nakumatt vehicle was remaining. “It surprised us when we saw that again the movable properties which were supposed to attach which were on the warranty we again being moved out of the country. Can you imagine and including this truck that we are seeing here. It was intercepted at Northern By-pass with a Kenyan driver who was also detained taking it to Kenya.” At the Nakumatt Warehouse in Gayaza, there were Court Orders stopping anyone from accessing the premises, unfortunately, different items had been sneaked out without a Court Notice. This implied that if such goods had been smuggled to Kenya, the suppliers would be left with nothing. Some suppliers chose to camp outside the Warehouse. Nakumatt closed in Uganda after failing to pay billions of money in form of taxes and money for suppliers.
