Earning From Carpentry

In the Bwaise industrial park is the workshop of Katumba Steven a senior six dropout who got the skills in carpentry after he watched his father do the same. “Daddy told me the reason as to why we all go to school is to get that knowledge and you already have that knowledge to do that work. Why don’t you go on with that and just develop it and put it to your maximum level.” Said, Katumba Steven – Carpenter.

Despite having challenges from the Chinese imported products, Katumba said that some Ugandans who once used Chinese products were running back to them for quality products. “China products are marketing much than our products. Because not all of us have reached that step of setting up good showrooms and paying that monthly rent to finish our items and take them on display. So we are finding a big problem competing with China products. But there are some clients who come and say they had a Chinese product but unfortunately it didn’t last for long.”

He sells most of his products on wholesale for people who have showrooms around Kampala and he uses social media as his form of advertising. “I started that immediately I had finished school; I started off doing such, I opened Steve Arts and Modern Furniture of Facebook. There are some designs that I don’t post, I send them on What’s App because they have copyrights.” Since he got the skill from his father he has also decided to train other youths who have shown interest in this job as he prepares himself to start his own showroom before he quits carpentry.
