An HIV Victim's Bold Story

Abused by relatives even as a minor, Barbra Kemigisha had no one to run to. coupled with threats silence was only her option. But this yet had another price for her, Kemigisha’s war had just started. “I was on the streets, I would sleep on people’s verandahs but one thing I knew was that HIV stops with me.” Ejected and rejected, she found herself in the arms of her lifetime nightmare. “Here I am HIV positive, first got pregnant at 15 because I chose not to listen.”

Years later, a visit to a nearby hospital had her HCG a diagnostic tool for testing HIV positive, crying didn’t even help. “...okay yes I had issues with my family but because I was not staying with my family it was like I knew I had to struggle on my own all the way.” For advocacy, she committed her time to a project dubbed the PILL POWER. “Meeting other young people who are HIV positive made me realize that I did not feel what they were feeling and I thought maybe I needed to make them feel motivated and encouraged but in the process I also wanted people to know that we have so much that we are going through and if you are negative, I really wouldn’t want you to cross over to where we are.”

Pill Power Club helps the positive living people gain their confidence and recycle the teams into profitable business ventures like making flower pots, tables among others. “We recycle empty ARV bottles into beautiful household items flower pots, chairs, tables but we are more passionate about ensuring that every young person living with HIV can reach a suppress viral load that will end new HIV infections in Uganda.”
